A SPANISH LANGUAGE NOVEL, BROWN UNIVERSITY
AWARD WINNING THESIS

...not only memorable and enchanting but an informed and necessary exploration of what it is like to live with OCD. Frankel has a magical way of finding bridges between notions people often see as separate: the silly and the serious, words and pictures, the patient and the doctor, the mind and the body, mainstream and alternative treatment options, and finally pain and peace. Whether you are looking for reliable therapeutic information or a heartwarming story of love, friendship and adventure, you’ll find it here.

When Allie found light in her path, her first instinct was to turn around and help those still in the dark.

Allie has found an effective balance, mixing the seriousness of the suffering that those affected and their families endure with touches of humor, resulting in an approachable and entertaining read. I expect that many readers to whom OCD is a foreign concept will see themselves in the characters. The humorous tone and banter between characters despite the gravity of their situation accurately portrays the paradoxes that this disorder causes in affected people. There is an incredible difficulty to enjoy life under the burden of the condition. I believe Allie's work will be a tremendous help to begin to change societal attitudes and misinformation, helping to create space for empathy and understanding.

It completely hooked me. This is really something new. What works especially is the mix of fiction with essential and actionable information about OCD spectrum conditions, a mix that shows the real pain that these conditions can cause, as well as the vitalist attitude necessary to face it. The characters are endearing, lively and so believable, and their conversations are hilarious, crushing, and often on topics that are not openly talked about nearly enough, and it's crucial that they are brought like this into unabashed dialogue.

Allie is addressing a HUGE and too often silent audience. Between 2.5% – 3% of the population suffers from this poorly understood condition. Portrayals, though popular in books and movies, often leave out the suffering and mention of how common it is. This condition does not discriminate, affecting people of all walks of life, yet shame silences. This is something that might even affect your doctor, your local police officer, the aeronautical engineer you work with, etc. Those affected need stories like 'Dancing in the Storm' because stigma, hopelessness, isolation and social misunderstanding create an additional suffering for those affected and their families. Ignorance and misinformation are obstacles in recovery. Silence in the face of the condition means it is not possible to generate the interest for the necessary generation of specialists. Professionals, much like many affected, are unaware of the prevalence of the condition and that there are effective treatments that can return people to a fulfilling life. For those affected, this book shows the playing field of available help options. For family members, it provides the chance to better understand their affected loved one. For society, it is a fun and different way of illustrating something that is so common, yet so hard to explain in words. It is an injustice that so few people know that in most cases, after just a few months, you can reduce suffering and be on your way to an optimal life. Accurate representations such as 'Dancing in the Storm' must be brought to society.
